Best Clarifying Shampoo

Everyone has a bad hair day once in awhile, but if you’re constantly struggling to get your hair looking shiny and healthy, it might be time for a total detox. You can use a clarifying shampoo to strip away a buildup of grease, product residue, and mineral deposits to give your strands a gorgeous fresh start.

What Is Clarifying Shampoo?

Clarifying shampoos offer a much deeper clean than traditional shampoos and are able to cut through grease, product buildup, and mineral deposits from hard water. They usually leave less residue behind as they don’t contain moisturizers and leave your strands feeling squeaky clean.

Think about all the styling products you use throughout the week; hair spray, mousse, gel, texturizing spray, dry shampoo… Add to this the residue left behind by your usual shampoo and conditioner, washing your hair in hard water, and the occasional swim in the pool.

It’s no wonder your hair starts to feel weighed down, extra greasy, dull, and limp.

It hadn’t even occurred to me that my normal shampoo wasn’t getting the job done until I tried a clarifying shampoo. It’s like giving your strands a detox session to leave it soft, shiny, and healthy.

Who Needs It?

If you suffer from greasy hair, you’re probably already familiar with the benefits of using a clarifying shampoo. They tend to cut through excess oil and sebum much more effectively than traditional shampoos, and help you go longer between washes as they don’t contain creamy moisturizers. If you use a bunch of styling products to keep your hair looking just the way you like it, you could probably benefit from using a clarifying shampoo every so often to completely remove the product buildup coating the outside of your hair follicles.

It provides a deep cleanse to your hair and scalp to promote healthier looking strands and improve shine and natural volume.

Living in an area with hard water means you often end up with mineral deposits which can make your hair feel dry, unmanageable, and dull, especially if you have blonde locks. Clarifying shampoos, especially those with chelating agents, can help keep the minerals from depositing in your hair and promote vibrant, bouncy strands.

Whether you swim for exercise or love cooling off in the summer, spending a lot of time in the pool can be harsh for your hair. Chlorine can be difficult to wash out with normal shampoo and has a very drying effect. Clarifying shampoos can really help swimmers keep their hair healthy and manageable.

How Often Should I Use It?

As clarifying shampoos don’t usually contain creamy moisturizers, they can be a little drying. That’s why it’s best not to use one every time your wash your hair.

How often you need to use it will depend on your styling habits, your hair’s texture, and how hard your water is. If you use a lot of product in your hair, have a greasy scalp, or spend a lot of time in pools, you can probably benefit from clarifying once a week.

If you live in an area with soft water, have dry hair, or use minimal styling products, you probably won’t need to use it more than once or twice a month.

You’ll probably need to experiment a little at first to see what works best for you. Overdoing it can strip your hair and scalp of its natural oils though, so cut back if your hair feels stringy or dry.

The deep cleanse that clarifying provides can make it harder to work through any tangles. So after using a clarifying shampoo, it’s best to follow on with a good-quality conditioner. This will help keep your hair nourished and will make your hair feel more manageable.

How To Choose The Right One

There are many clarifying shampoos available, and choosing the right one will depend on your individual needs and hair type.

If you have color or chemically treated hair, make sure you opt for a product which won’t strip your color too much or affect your hair’s texture. It’s always best to wait a few weeks after any treatments.

Some formulas are more gentle than others, so if you’re planning on using a clarifying shampoo more regularly, it’s probably best to choose a brand which is sulfate free and contains essential oils.

Some people prefer their shampoo to be sudsy, whilst others feel they get a deeper clean from a shampoo which isn’t too foamy.

Whichever your preference, take a look at the list below to read more about my favorite clarifying shampoos.

How To Get The Best Out Of Your Shampoo

Washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo is very similar to using traditional shampoos. But to get the best results, you can add one extra step into your routine.

Wet your hair and massage a small amount of shampoo into your scalp for at least a minute. This helps target a buildup of grease and residue on your scalp and close to your roots.

Rinse your hair thoroughly, and then shampoo the rest of your hair and let it sit for a few minutes so it can lift up any mineral deposits and product build-up. Just use the time to wash your face or shave your legs, it’s all about multitasking!

Finally, rinse your hair again making sure your hair is completely clean. Then condition your hair as usual or apply a deep conditioner.

This peppermint clarifying shampoo is suitable for all hair types and its gentle formula makes it a good option if you have color or chemically treated hair. As well as providing a deep cleanse, peppermint oil invigorates your scalp and has natural healing properties.

This clarifying shampoo by Moroccanoil provides a deep cleanse for your hair and scalp and contains a blend of essential oils to help restore your hair’s moisture. It has a natural, argan oil scent which lasts all day.

You can use it weekly if you swim regularly, live in an area with hard water, or use an abundance of styling products, or twice a month if you just want to give your hair a clean start.

It should make your hair beautifully shiny after washing. You’ll probably find that other hair products you usually apply work better and that your locks are much easier to style.

As with most clarifying shampoos, you’ll need to apply a good amount of conditioner to work through any knots. As it completely removes residue, your hair might feel more tangled than usual (but it’s just super clean!).

The Bottom Line

You might not realize your shampoo isn’t providing a deep clean until you use a clarifying shampoo for the first time. A build-up of product residue, grease, and mineral deposits can make your hair feel dull and lifeless, so if you haven’t used one before, your strands could do with a total reboot.

My favorite product is Moroccanoil Clarifying Shampoo. It’s one of the only ones I’ve come across which is sulfate free, which means it cleanses without using harsh detergents, and shouldn’t strip your hair and scalp of natural oils.

You can use it on a weekly or monthly basis, whatever you find suits you best. It’s suitable for all hair types, including color and chemically treated locks, and nourishes your hair to restore natural shine and moisture.

Although it’s a little pricier than some of the other options, its high-quality ingredients mean you get a deep clean without over-drying your hair and scalp.
