Between hair dryers, flat irons, curling wands and all the other gadgets my other half collects, we have a serious space problem in our bathroom. That’s why the TYME flat iron caught my eye, as it looks like a powerful 2-in-1 tool that really curls as well as it straightens.
Things to consider before buying a flat iron
Before choosing your next flat iron, it’s best to think about a few things first. How often will you be using it? Do you want to create versatile styles? How much heat can your hair handle?
Choosing an iron that best suits your needs will not only help you achieve results that’ll have you walking out the door like you’re floating down a runway, but will also help protect your hair from heat damage.
Today I’m talking about titanium flat irons which are the highest quality metal straighteners you can get. They are usually lightweight, offer a really fast heat transfer, and allow you to straighten at a faster pace than other materials do.
Titanium can be a great choice if you have thick, long hair which usually requires a few passes before getting into line, but may not be suitable if your hair feels weak or damaged.
If you’re not used to using a titanium iron, it can be easy to dry your hair out if you don’t find the right speed to straighten without sapping moisture. That said, once you get the hang of it, you can straighten or curl in record time as it has such excellent heat conductivity.
If you like the idea of a two-in-one tool that curls as well as it straightens, this could be a great choice for you.
It has gold-plated titanium plates which heat up to 400ºF (204ºC) in less than a minute. As titanium is an excellent heat conductor, the plates transfer heat to your hair much faster than traditional ceramic irons.
This model only has one heat setting though, so you won’t be able to adjust the temperature at all.
Due to the unique design of this flat iron, it can take a little time to get used to. One side of the plates has guidelines so you can lay it down on a surface without worrying about burns, and this is the side you use to create lovely curls.
On the other side, the plates look like a traditional flat iron, and, you guessed it, this is the side you’ll use to straighten your strands and create a sleek, smooth look.
TYME have created lots of handy tutorials that show exactly how to curl or straighten your hair, and they’re really worth watching before having a go yourself.
The package also includes a free heat-resistant travel sleeve, so you can easily store it or take with you when you’re on the move.
What I Like
What I don't Like
Here are some of the TYME’s best features:
Gold-plated titanium plates
In case titanium wasn’t hot enough for you, these plates are also gold-plated. This means it gets hot really fast, and most importantly, stays hot whilst you style your tresses.
They provide an easy glide which shouldn’t snag your hair and helps avoid uncomfortable pulling. You don’t want to peer into your basin and see a bunch of hair that’s fallen out whilst you’re trying to tame your hair. It’s just not on!
Negative ionic output
Titanium naturally emits negative ions. Ok, so it’s not as much as materials such as tourmaline, but it does help seal your hair’s cuticle to add shine and retain moisture.
Negative ions also help reduce frizz and flyaways, as they counteract positive ions in the atmosphere which are often the cause of puffy-looking hair. I’d always opt for an iron with a negative ionic output, as I’ll take all the help I can get to get frizziness under control.
Fast heat up
The TYME flat iron heats up to 400ºF in less than a minute. As I said before, it gets really hot, really fast. Unfortunately, you can’t adjust the temperature setting, so if you have fine or damaged hair, you’ll need to be extra careful.
Getting your hair to look sleek and prolong the time your style holds is all about getting your timing right. At these temperatures, passing over your hair too quickly will only heat the outside layer and can promote frizziness.
Whilst going over it too slowly can make your hair look slightly dull as it will be losing that all important moisture. This looks like a high-quality iron, but you do need to learn how to use its heat properly.
Many irons promise to make curling your hair easy, but in reality, most are designed to do a good job of straightening. Curling your hair with a traditional iron can take a lot of practice, but with this model, they make it easy for you.
One side is designed to create soft curls, beachy waves, or tight ringlets. Once you get the hang of turning your wrist towards the floor with the guidelines towards your head, you’ll be creating curls in no time.
The other side is designed like a traditional straightener, so you just section off your hair and get to work.
Just a word of warning, left-handed gals might find it hard in the beginning, as most of the tutorials are shown holding the iron in your right hand.

Styles that hold
If you’ve used older curling irons before, you might be used to your curls dropping a few hours after styling. How frustrating is it to spend time and effort creating stunning curls if a few hours later they look dull and flat?
As titanium delivers a rapid heat transfer at really high temperatures it can help you create curls and waves that last for two or three days. You can also use a touch of hairspray before you curl to make them last even longer.
When you spend your hard earned cash on a high-quality product you want to be reassured that if anything goes wrong, it will be dealt with no hassle.
This model comes with a 1-year warranty and their customer service seems to be pretty quick at sorting out any problems. Remember to check if the warranty applies to models bought online, as annoyingly, these are sometimes excluded.
Rotating swivel cord
Useful “how to” videos
This may seem like quite a simple feature, but it makes styling much easier as it helps avoid your wrist getting tangled around the cord. It’s also easier to twist the iron when you’re creating curls or waves, as the cord stays out of your way.
As this model’s design is a little different compared to traditional straighteners, you might need a little help in the beginning. TYME have created loads of useful “how to” videos to show you how to straighten or curl.
You can find them on their website or on Youtube, and they really do help.
As I mentioned earlier, their customer service seems pretty on top of things.
They also offer one-on-one online tutorials with their stylists, so if you’re having any trouble or have questions about your hair’s maintenance or health, they can help you out. Just check out their website for more information.
Youtube: Learning the TYME iron
I enjoy coming across brands that put the effort into helping their customers get the best out of their products. TYME certainly seem to do this by constantly posting videos on how to create new hairstyles and how to use the iron if you’ve just bought it.
I can see from other reviewers that once you get the technique, this iron makes straightening and curling really simple. Many users seem to be creating salon results in about 15 minutes, and anything which helps cut down on styling time gets a tick from me!
It’s often useful to compare the iron you’re interested in with other similar models on the market. So here are some of my top picks for titanium irons in a similar price range:
The Pro Nano Titanium by Babyliss is a lightweight model with adjustable heat settings. There are 50 heat settings to choose from so you should find the right one no matter what your hair type is.
It emits negative ions to seal your hair’s cuticles and retain moisture, add shine, and reduce frizz, so it really helps your style stay sleek and smooth. It gets hot really fast and provides a quick heat transfer, so you should be able to cut down on styling time.
What I Like
The Pro G2 by CHI uses titanium infused ceramic plates to add extra durability and create a smoother glide. It has a digital temperature control so you can select your preferred heat settings, and it’s also color-coded according to your hair type, so you can easily figure out what temperature suits you best.
The package includes a heat-resistant pouch so you can lay it down whilst you style and easily pack it when you travel.
This could be a great choice if you have thick hair as you don’t need to keep going over your it time and time again to get sleek, straight results.
What I Like
The Neuro Smooth by Paul Mitchell has cushioned plates with beveled edges to provide a smooth glide with no snags. It also helps avoid unattractive crease marks as you don’t need to apply as much pressure to get great results.
It reaches temperature in less than a minute and goes up to 450ºF, one of the highest on the market, and has a really fast heat recovery thanks to its microchip sensors.
This is a good tool for straightening and creating flips and waves, but the TYME should do a much better job of curling.
What I Like
Sometimes we need a little help from heat tools to get our hair looking just right. The key to not damaging your locks is using high-quality materials which offer a fast heat transfer so that the entire hair fiber receives heat, and not just the outside layer.
The TYME flat iron uses gold-plated titanium, so it’s durable, heats up fast, and provides an even heat distribution to avoid damaging heat spikes. On top of this, you can use it to straighten as well as curl, which makes it one of the most versatile tools on the market.
