Liquid foundation is often a key part of our daily beauty regime, but it’s so easy to get it wrong and end up drawing more attention to dry patches and red spots. The key to a flawless look is matching the perfect shade for your skin, as well as choosing the right formula for your skin type. Here I’ll be taking an in-depth look at water-based foundation, and how Tarte’s Rainforest of the Sea shapes up.
Before You Buy Your Next Foundation
Applying foundation can be a tricky process to master, but with practice, the right tools and the right formula, you can easily create a smooth, glowing finish and create a flawless complexion.
Foundation can be used to cover blemishes and redness, smooth your complexion, protect from sun damage, even out your skin tone and add a luminous glow. So if you don’t have one yet or aren’t happy with the finish your current makeup is giving you, you could consider switching to a water-based formula.
Water-based makeup tends to be more lightweight and provides a natural finish. They usually offer medium to full cover and are easily buildable so you can control your finish. Oil-free ranges are also a great option if you have oily or acne-prone skin, as they tend to create fewer breakouts.
If you prefer thicker formulas which offer more coverage, you’re probably better going for an oil or silicone-based foundation. However, these can make oily skin look even shinier, so it’s worth experimenting with a few formulas to see which suits your skin type best.
This water-based foundation has a hydrating formula which offers full coverage for up to 12 hours. It contains 20% water, and helps cover redness, dark spots and evens out your skin tone.
Tarte uses a unique blend of algae and marine flower extracts which are packed with Vitamin E and antioxidants to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, combat early signs of aging and restore and brighten your complexion.
It has over 21 different shades to choose from, which should make it easy for you to find your perfect match. You only need 1 or 2 drops to create a light cover and about 4 or 5 for medium to full coverage.
It can also help protect your skin from harmful UV rays as it has an integrated non-chemical SPF 15 sunscreen.
This is a great option for all skin types and doesn’t usually show up any dry spots you might have on your skin. To get the best results, it’s a good idea to apply a primer first so your foundation glides on smoothly, and to use a setting spray or powder if you need longer lasting results.

Features & Benefits
Although the texture can feel a bit watery when you first put it on, it does offer great coverage. One of the great features of this foundation is that you can apply additional thin layers without it looking too thick or “caked on”, so you can play around with the look you want until you get it just right.
For a natural daytime look, you should only need a couple of drops to achieve a smooth, radiant finish. For full coverage, you can wait about a minute for it to set before applying the next layer, and build it up as much as you like.
As this formula consists of 20% water, it can help keep your skin hydrated throughout the day (or night!). Keeping your skin properly moisturized can help keep it looking healthier, plumper and naturally radiant.
Some oil and silicone-based foundations can end up drying out your complexion and show up any rough, drier skin patches, which is precisely what you’re trying to avoid. This product seems to do a good job of smoothing out pores and fine lines for all skin types, including oily and combination.
As well as evening out your skin tone and smoothing pores, Tarte’s water-based foundation can help combat some of the early signs of aging and protect from damage caused by free radicals.
Rich In Antioxidants
Their proprietary blend of algae and marine flowers is packed with Vitamin E and antioxidants which also work as a natural emollient and preserver.
Much like a face cream, you can work on restoring and brightening your complexion at the same time.
Unlike some foundations with thicker textures and heavier finishes, it shouldn’t block your pores, cause irritation or worsen any existing skin issues such as redness and breakouts.
Lightweight textureIf you’re used to thicker foundations with an oil, silicone or alcohol base, it might take you a little while to get used to this lighter texture. However, this makes it more breathable so you don’t end up clogging your pores or finishing the day with the dreaded “caked” look.
This type of foundation is ideal if you have oily or acne prone skin, as you can avoid creating more shine and breaking out.
Tarte has designed a dropper applicator to make it easier to control exactly how much product you’re applying to your brush. As you only need a couple of drops if you’re going for a lighter cover, it can be handy to make sure you’re not overdoing it.
However, it does make it harder to get every last drop out of the bottle, and can be a bit fiddly to use. Some people love it and some people hate it. But as the foundation itself is high-quality and long-lasting, I wouldn’t let it put you off trying it.
21 Different Shades
The whole point of applying foundation is to smooth away any skin imperfections and create a soft, even complexion. What you don’t want is to have a noticeable line dividing your natural skin tone and the areas where you’ve applied the product.
That’s why it’s so important to spend some time matching your foundation to your skin tone, and take into consideration how much this might change at different times of the year.
The Rainforest of the Sea comes in 21 different shades, which makes it much easier to find the perfect match. I like using a slightly darker shade in summer, as my skin tone darkens as soon as I step out into the sun.
No Animal Testing
Unfortunately, it can be quite difficult to find makeup brands which are against animal testing. This is a vegan friendly, cruelty-free foundation and an approved PETA participant.
As you’re applying a product on an area of delicate skin, it’s worth knowing what ingredients are being used in your foundation. Harsh chemicals and parabens can dry out your skin and cause irritation, so it’s better to go for a brand which leaves these out.
This foundation is paraben, mineral oil, phthalate, sulfate and gluten free, so should be a suitable option if you have sensitive skin.
Non-Chemical SPF 15
As we become more and more aware of the damage that harmful UV rays can cause, it’s always a good idea to walk out of the door wearing at least an SPF 15.
I know that many sunscreens are greasy and have a slightly sticky feel to them, but with this foundation, you won’t even notice it. It uses a non-chemical formula which includes titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to protect you from early signs of aging, dark spots and free radicals.
As I mentioned earlier, the biggest controversy surrounding this foundation seems to the dropper applicator. Some find it awkward to use and others love it, but most reviews seem to agree on the fact that it’s a great lightweight foundation that offers good coverage and works well for all skin types.
If you think a water-based foundation is the right formula for you, here are a few alternatives to Tarte’s Rainforest of the Sea that are in a similar price range:
This foundation is lightweight and has a gel-like consistency. You can use it on your body as well as your face, and it has a sheer to buildable coverage. As it contains 80% water it’s extremely hydrating, promotes your skin’s elasticity, and gives you a natural, dewy glow.
Its unique gel texture makes it easy to apply and it sets quickly, so by finishing with a setting spray or powder you shouldn’t have any transfer issues. It offers a medium cover, which is perfect for the daytime, but is still buildable.
